County Dublin, located in the east of Ireland, is home to the city of Dublin, Ireland's largest city, and its capital. Today, Dublin is a city of over one million people. Dublin City is divided by the River Liffey, which flows west-east through the centre of the city. Located on the southside is the most popular shopping area around Grafton Street. On the northside is the shopping area around Henry and O'Connell Streets.
Dublin's top visitor attractions include: the Guinness Storehouse, which traces the history and how Guinness is made in the brewery; Trinity College, Ireland's oldest university and home to the famous Book of Kells; Dublinia, which tells the story of medieval Dublin; Kilmainham Gaol, located west of the city centre, the site where many of Ireland's most famous patriots were imprisoned; Dublin Castle, the centre of British rule in Ireland for 700 years; and Temple Bar, Dublin's lively cultural and nightlife district. Dublin city is renowned for its excellent bars and pubs, most of which are located on the southside, and in Temple Bar in particular. Outside of the city centre there is much more. There are many pleasant towns and villages located along the coast such as Dalkey, Dun Laoghaire, Howth, and Malahide.
